C. TERMS

1.             Desktop – The layout when you turn on your computer.

2.             CPU - the Central Processing Unit. The processing chip that is the "brains" of a computer.

3.             disk - a spinning platter made of magnetic or optically etched material on which data can be stored.

4.             disk drive - the machinery that writes the data from a disk and/or writes data to a disk.

5.             hard drive - a large capacity storage device made of multiple disks housed in a rigid case.

6.             RAM - acronym for Random-Access Memory. Determines how much active memory you have.

7.             Megabyte – MB - This is a measurement used in digital systems such as PCs to describe storage capacity (usually RAM, Hard Drive capacity is mostly stated in Gigabytes these days). Mathematically one Megabyte is 220 (1,048,576)

8.             MHz – Megahertz - A frequency measurement, refers to millions of cycles per second, for example a processor running at 500 MHz can handle 500 Million cycles per second. See also GHz, 1 MHz is equal to 1,000,000 Hz. Hertz is named after Physicist Heinrich – Detrmines the speed at which you run applications.

9.             Gigabyte – GB - This is a measurement used to describe 1024 Megabytes. Hard disk capacity is usually measured in Gigabytes. 1 Gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 Bytes. Extension – Each program you use names the file with its own extension. Applications are not likely to open another program’s extension without a converter.  An extension is the part of the file name that follows the period: .doc, .ppt., xls, .wav, .gif, .jpg

Media files can often be translated within a media application.

You often can change the extension to SAVE a file AS some other extension. For example, you can save a Word file as a PDF. Office 2007 has different extensions than office 2003. For example, a Word 2007 file will save with the extension .docx. Excel 2007 will save as .xlsx

10. USB port - Universal Serial Bus is a slot on your computer that allows you to transfer data quickly and easily.
